If you paid tuition and related expenses for a eligible student who, at the beginning of 2003, had not yet completed his or her first or second year of college, you can get a credit for up to $1,500 for expenses paid for the student. The Hope Scholarship credit can only be claimed twice, however, and the student, in addition to being a first or second year student, must be enrolled at least half time. You can claim up to $1,500 for each eligible student. The credit, however, cannot provide a refund. The credit is phased out if you have an adjusted gross income between $41,000 and $51,000 and you file as single, or between $83,000 and $103,000 if you file a joint return.
