Believe it or not, and whether you like it or not, flag burning is a legal form of protest in the United States, enjoying the same protection as other forms of free speech. The flag burning issue, however, was not always so clear. In the late 1980s, a man was convicted under Texas law for desecrating the flag, but his conviction was overturned. Subsequent attempts by Congress writing legislation against flag burning has also failed, quickly struck down by the Supreme Court.
